Do bicyclists need insurance coverage?

Trooper Steve answers viewer questions

ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve Montiero answers viewer questions and shares tips about the rules of the road, helping Central Florida residents become better drivers by being better educated.

A viewer asked about insurance coverage while riding a bicycle.

“No state in the country requires to have ‘insurance coverage’ when operating a bicycle,” he said. “I can understand the argument but then again, no. You are not required a driver’s license when operating a bicycle and is available for a wide range of ages.”

He said the argument used is that in a crash, the car will always cause more damage.

“This does not mean some of these bicyclist out there should not be paying attention and doing the right thing, all the time. You know who you are.”
